Most people choose a hotel in Busselton the same way. They open a map, find the jetty, and book whatever sits closest to it. It is not a bad instinct, but it is only half a decision. The jetty is a morning, perhaps an afternoon. The room is where the rest of the trip happens: the breakfasts, the rainy hour, the evening after a long day in the wineries, the moment the children finally fall asleep. Get that part right and almost everything else about a South West holiday falls into place.
Busselton has more choice than its size suggests. There are hotels in the town centre, motels on the main roads, holiday homes in the suburbs and a long run of resorts set directly on the sand along Geographe Bay. Each suits a different kind of trip, and the right one for a weekend away as a couple is rarely the right one for a fortnight with three children and a grandparent. This guide walks through the questions worth asking before you book, in roughly the order they matter, so you can choose with confidence rather than by proximity alone.
We have an obvious interest here, of course. Abbey Beach Resort is one of the largest Busselton hotels, and we would love you to stay with us. But the questions below hold true wherever you book, and a guest who has thought them through is a guest who has a better holiday. That is good for everyone in town.
Choose the room for the trip you are taking, not the photo on the booking page.
Chapter 01 · LocationTown, Foreshore or the Bay
Busselton stretches along the inside curve of Geographe Bay, and where you stay along that curve changes the rhythm of each day. Think less about the distance to any single attraction and more about what you want to be able to do without getting in the car.
Staying in or near the centre puts the jetty, the foreshore playground, the cafes along Queen Street and the evening walk along the water within easy reach on foot. It suits short city-break style visits and travellers without a car. The trade-off is that the town beach is a public foreshore rather than a quiet stretch outside your door, and you will still drive for the wineries, the capes and the caves.
Best for · Short stays · Walkers · Jetty and town events
West of the town centre, the land between Bussell Highway and the water holds most of the region's beachfront resorts. Here the bay is calm and shallow, the sand runs for kilometres, and you can be swimming before breakfast. You are still only a few minutes from town, and you are closer to Dunsborough, Yallingup and the Margaret River wine region, which takes ten or fifteen minutes off every day trip west. This is where Abbey Beach Resort sits, at 595 Bussell Highway, with beachfront Busselton accommodation a two-minute walk from the water.
Best for · Families · Beach lovers · Touring the South West
Some visitors base themselves further west, closer to the surf breaks and the Cape to Cape Track. It is a lovely part of the coast, but it adds time to anything happening in Busselton itself, from the jetty to the summer events on the foreshore. If your plans split evenly between the two towns, the bay strip in between often makes the most sense. We cover the trade-offs in more detail in our guide to accommodation near Dunsborough.
Best for · Surfers · Hikers · Capes-focused trips
A useful test is to list the three things you most want to do and note where each one is. If two of the three are the jetty and the town, stay central. If they are the beach, the wineries and the coast to the west, the beachfront strip will save you time every single day. Either way, it helps to know what is nearby before you arrive. Our guide to the Busselton Jetty and Underwater Observatory covers the town's best-known attraction, including when to go to avoid the queues.
Chapter 02 · The RoomHotel Room or Apartment
This is the decision that shapes a stay more than any other, and it is worth being honest about how you travel. A hotel room is built for sleeping well and heading out. An apartment is built for living in. Neither is better in the abstract; the question is which one fits the next few days.
When a Hotel-Style Suite Is Right
For a couple on a weekend away, or anyone visiting for a wedding, a conference or a single event, a hotel-style room keeps things simple. You are out most of the day, you will eat most meals out, and you want somewhere comfortable and calm to come back to. At Abbey Beach Resort, the Studio Spa Suite is designed for exactly that: it sleeps two, has a double spa bath and reverse-cycle air-conditioning, and room service from the Reflections menu is available when you would rather not go out at all.
When an Apartment Makes More Sense
Once a stay runs past two or three nights, or involves children, an apartment starts to earn its keep. A full kitchen means breakfast on your own schedule and a simple dinner in on the night everyone is tired. A separate lounge means the adults are not sitting in the dark at 8pm. A dining table and a balcony matter more on day five than they do on day one. Self-contained one bedroom apartments sleep up to three, and the two bedroom lakeside apartments sleep up to six.
When the Group Is Larger
Extended families and groups of friends often default to booking several rooms side by side. It works, but it splits the group at exactly the moments that make a holiday, the long breakfast and the evening drink. A single larger apartment keeps everyone together. Our three bedroom, three bathroom apartment sleeps up to eight, and the three bathrooms are the detail most groups remember.
If you are torn between a hotel room and an apartment, look at how many meals you expect to eat in. Two or more a day across a stay of four nights or longer almost always tips the balance towards the apartment, and the saving on eating out often covers the difference in rate.
Chapter 03 · FacilitiesWhat You Will Actually Use
Facility lists tend to read the same from one property to the next, which makes them easy to skim past. The trick is to ignore the list as a whole and look for the four or five things your group will genuinely use, then check that each one is there and open when you are visiting.
For Families
Weather is the great equaliser on a South West holiday. Geographe Bay is calm and warm through summer, but the shoulder seasons bring cool mornings and the occasional wet day, so a heated indoor pool is worth more than any amount of outdoor space. Look for a shallow wading area for small children, a playground they can reach without an adult walking them across a car park, and enough grass to burn off energy before dinner. Abbey Beach Resort has a 25 metre heated indoor pool with a children's wading pool, two outdoor pools for the warmer months, a playground and a lake ringed by gardens, all a short walk from the rooms.
For Couples
Couples tend to value what happens in the evening. Can you have a drink and a good meal without driving? Is there somewhere quiet to sit after dinner? Is there a spa bath, a sauna, a reason to stay in? With two restaurants and three bars on site, including Reflections Cafe for breakfast from 7:30am and the Atrium Restaurant for dinner, the car can stay parked once you are back from the day.
For Active Travellers
If your days revolve around walking, riding or swimming, look for the practical things: secure bike storage, a gym for the days the weather turns, a sauna for tired legs, and easy access to the beach itself. A tennis or squash court is a bonus for groups who travel with a competitive streak. The full list at Abbey Beach is on our resort facilities page, and it is worth a read before you pack.
For Guests With Access Needs
Accessible rooms vary widely between properties, so it pays to ask specific questions about step-free entry, bathroom layout and parking rather than relying on a single icon. Abbey Beach Resort offers a wheelchair accessible two bedroom apartment, and our reservations team is glad to talk through the details before you book.
Suites, Apartments and the Bay at Your Door
From a Studio Spa Suite for two to a three bedroom apartment for the whole family, every room at Abbey Beach Resort comes with direct access to Geographe Bay and full resort facilities.
Check AvailabilityChapter 04 · TimingWhen to Book, and When to Come
Busselton is a seasonal town, and the same room can be easy to find one week and impossible the next. Knowing the calendar helps you book at the right time and, just as usefully, pick the right time to visit.
A handful of major events fill the town. Ironman Western Australia in early December and the Festival of Busselton in January are the two that catch most visitors out. Regular competitors and festival-goers often rebook for the following year before they check out, so if your dates are fixed around an event, book as soon as you know you are going.
Book · As early as possible, often a year ahead
The Christmas and January holidays are the town's busiest weeks, and Easter, the April school holidays and the long weekends follow close behind. Families who want a particular apartment type, or rooms close together for a larger group, should book several months out.
Book · Three to six months ahead for apartments
Autumn brings settled days and the vintage in the wineries. Spring brings wildflowers and the tail of the whale season, when whale watching in Busselton and Geographe Bay is at its best. Both are quieter, both are often better value, and both are when many locals would tell you the region is at its finest.
Book · A few weeks ahead is usually enough
Chapter 05 · ValueGetting the Best Rate
Price comparison is part of every booking now, and that is sensible. But the lowest number on a comparison site is not always the best value, and there are a few things worth checking before you commit.
Compare Like With Like
Make sure the rooms you are comparing are genuinely equivalent. A hotel room and a two bedroom apartment can sit side by side on a results page while offering very different stays. Check what is included, whether parking is free, whether there is a kitchen, and what the cancellation terms are. A slightly higher flexible rate is often worth it for a trip booked months ahead.
Look at Longer Stays
Many properties price longer stays more favourably per night, and the difference does not always show until you search your exact dates. If you are weighing three nights against four, run both through the booking engine before you decide. The fourth night is frequently better value than it looks.
Book Direct
Booking directly with the property usually gives you the most flexibility, the clearest terms and a direct line to the people who will be looking after you. It also means your requests, from a ground floor apartment to a cot to an early check-in, go straight to the team rather than through a third party. It is worth checking our current deals and packages too, as there is often a romance or multi-night package running.
Chapter 06 · The ChecklistHow to Choose Properly
With the big decisions made, a short final checklist catches the details that most often cause disappointment on arrival.
Check What Beachfront Means
Beachfront, beachside and near the beach can mean very different things. Ask how far the walk to the sand actually is, and whether you cross a road to get there. At Abbey Beach Resort there is direct beach access, a two-minute walk from your room or apartment.
Read the Room Description, Not Just the Name
Two rooms with the same name can differ in view, floor and layout. If a ground floor apartment matters for a pram or a grandparent, or an upper floor matters for the ocean glimpse, say so when you book. Our beachfront two bedroom apartments come in ground, first and second floor versions for exactly this reason.
Think About the Evening
Where will you eat on the night you arrive late? Is there room service, takeaway, or a restaurant on site? It is a small question that makes a big difference after the drive down from Perth.
Plan for the Occasion
If you are in town for a wedding, choose somewhere that makes the day easy for you and your guests. Abbey Beach Resort hosts Busselton beach weddings in its gardens and on the sand, which means guests staying on site can walk from their room to the ceremony and back again.
Abbey Beach Resort is a cashless venue across all outlets. Room charge, Eftpos and all major credit cards are accepted, so there is no need to stop for cash on the way down.
The best hotel in Busselton is the one that fits the trip in front of you. Think about where you want to spend your days, how your group likes to live, and what you will actually use, then book early enough to get the room you want. Do that, and the bay, the jetty, the wineries and the capes will take care of the rest.
